Laser Gum Depigmentation is the best available option nowadays to treat black gummy smile.
In some patients there are high levels of black pigment [melanin] in oral tissue particularly gingiva giving non cosmetic smile.
Melanin, carotene and hemoglobin are the most common natural pigments contributing to the normal color of the gums
Hyperpigmentation of the gingiva is caused by excessive melanin deposition by the melanocytes. These melanocytes are located mainly in the basal and the suprabasal cell layers of the epithelium. Brown or dark pigmentation and discoloration of gingival tissue can be also caused by variety of local and systemic factors. Systemic conditions such as endocrine disturbances, Albright’s syndrome, malignant melanoma, antimalarial therapy, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, trauma, hemochromatosis, chronic pulmonary disease and racial pigmentation are known causes of oral melanin pigmentation.
Soft tissue diode lasers are used to remove superficial layer of gums [gingiva], which contains black melanin pigment giving black gummy smiles & transforms the soft tissue in ideal pink color.
After couple of days of healing excellent pink gum smile is achieved.
With use of lasers, it is very comfortable procedure as compared to conventional surgery. In Which a blade is used to slice of the superficial layer of gums leaving raw open bleeding gingiva which is extremely painful to the patient.
